In Bad Salons ...
Re-use Of Crystals : An Unsanitary Abuse Which Saves Money But Doesn't Save Your Skin.
New crystals should be used for each new client but bad salons will re-use crystals to maximize profits. The consequences of recycling crystals to cut costs ? Bad results and bad skin.
Firstly, used crystals are less abrasive than unused ones and are therefore less effective. Secondly, used crystals can be unsanitary, exposing skin to harmful bacteria. For example, if the client before you has acne and a pustule is unroofed during their microdermabrasion, bacteria in that pustule will contaminate the used crystal that is being saved for your skin.
But suppose the salon is reputable and does not re-use its crystals. Unfortunately, the client is still at significant risk.
In Good Salons ...
Cross-Contamination Of Crystals.
Microdermabrasion machines spray abrasive crystals onto the skin through a specially designed hand piece (which is often trademarked). The hand piece has either 2 tubes or openings of some kind, the first to deposit crystals onto the skin and the second to remove them (along with any exfoliated skin debris).
Theoretically, the hand piece controls this ebb and flow of crystals and debris. In practice, used crystals and debris get everywhere, on the floor, on salon equipment and on you - in your hair, in your ears, up your nose, around your eyes, even in your mouth. Remember that the machine operator will be wearing a protective mask and gloves, if they are following professional codes of conduct. You have neither.
There is a major health risk for the client in this scattered mess of crystals and skin debris. For the skin debris from previous clients may contain infectious human tissues, bodily fluids or blood. And don't count on all this being cleaned up before you have your treatment. However clean the salon is to the naked eye, it is not sterile. Moreover, the crystals and debris are colorless and easy to miss.
At worst, you can be exposed to the HIV virus (which causes AIDS), to Hepatitis B or to Hepatitis C. HIV virus infections and Hepatitis C can creep up on you without you knowing about it. They do not necessarily have any immediate symptoms and may only be detected long after the infection was incurred.
